Breastfeeding Peer Support
Peer supporters are volunteer mothers who have breastfed their own babies. They undertake a training course to enable them to give support and accurate information to other. Mothers play a vital role within their communities and their work complements that of health professionals such as Health Visitors and Midwives.
Twenty-two schemes have been funded by the Welsh Assembly Government to provide training for Breastfeeding Peer Supporters across the country, in both urban and rural settings. A sample of these projects will be evaluated by North East Wales Institute Wrexham (NEWI) in order to identify the effectiveness of the scheme.
